Running Rabbits Accreditation Media Release

MEDIA RELEASE For immediate release 7 August 2015 THE RUNNING RABBITS MILITARY MUSEUM GAINS MUSEUM ACCREDITATION

The Running Rabbits Military Museum has been granted Accreditation by Museums Australia (Victoria). Located in Upwey, The Running Rabbits Military Museum has worked hard to meet set criteria from the National Standards for Museums and Galleries.

Running Rabbits Military Museum operated by the Upwey-Belgrave RSL, is a thriving Victorian volunteer run museum. The Museum opened on ANZAC day 2009 and is named in dedication to those who fought so valiantly on the Kokoda Track. The Museum’s collection contains weaponry, documents and equipment from the Boer War through WWI and WWII to the present day. There are over 2,500 items of memorabilia, photographs and artefacts on display and a library of books and magazines available to visitors.  The Museum is focused on education for people of all ages and provides a space for visitors to understand the local impact of war.  It is the first RSL museum to be accredited through the Museum Accreditation Program.

To become accredited, museums spend 2-3 years developing procedures, policies, and practice to meet recognised museum standards. Training, advice, and other resources are available to assist museums in meeting these standards.

The Victorian-based Museum Accreditation Program (MAP) is now in its 22nd year and is run by Museums Australia (Victoria), the professional association for the museum and gallery sector. There are currently 70 organisations Accredited and a further 28 working towards this goal.

“We are delighted to recognise the commitment and hard work shown by the team at Running Rabbits Military Museum. Caring for our shared heritage is an important task and by becoming accredited Running Rabbits Military Museum has proven to be a leading museum in Victoria” said Rosemary Hanscombe, Co-Manager of the Museum Accreditation Program at Museums Australia (Victoria).

A formal presentation of the Running Rabbits Military Museum’s Accreditation certificate, signed by the Hon Martin Foley MP, Minister for Creative Industries, was made at the 2015 Victorian Museum Awards, held on Thursday 6 August at the National Gallery of Victoria.

Our 740+ museums include galleries, science centres, Indigenous Keeping Places, historical societies, historic houses, botanic gardens, zoos, aquaria, cultural centres and archaeological monuments. Two-thirds of these are volunteer-run ‘community museums’ caring for an estimated 1.5m objects in Victoria. The Museum Accreditation Program (MAP) is a framework used by museums to improve museum standards and increase profile. Over 13% of collecting organisations in the state are involved in MAP.
